problem with chkdsk 2

Last week I began getting a message on bootup that my hard disk was failing press F1 to continue. After pressing F1 the computer finished booting and functioned normally. I
scheduled chkdsk with fixes checked and rebooted. When chkdsk started it displayed the message "cannot open volume for direct access". I installed a new drive and successfully cloned the old one. Everything seems to be fine except I still get the "cannot open volume for direct access" on bootup.

I am running XP home with all updates.

Anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this.

A way around this could be to run ChkDsk /r from the Recovery Console.

Besides Norton, ZoneAlarm can be a problem too.

this is an annoyance - not something i want to spend money on.

i haven't installed the recovery console and tried this, but even if it ran it i think the problem would persist. i am not re scheduling chkdsk to run it is hanging on from when i originally tried to run it before replacing the drive (probably in the registry).

i wonder if the original problem (replace disk message could have been a software problem not hardware) i ran sfc /scannow (after new drive) and it asked for cd - (never happened before). is there any way to see what it replaced?

In Event Viewer use the dropdown menu of View then the Filter option and search for Winlogon in the Event Viewer (System). You can try the same method and look for Chkdsk (Application).

You might find that once run (ChkDsk) it would settle things down.
