I have recently formatted my HD and have problems wirh reinstalling some of my programs like Windows media player 7.1. Program at the beginning stops and says that there is problem with a cabinet file. I have tried to reinstall the Windows 98 but at the end of installation program stops, it doesn't finish the final part of installation.
I have formattet my drive several times and every thing went smooth except this time. I can't figure it out what the problem is and how to solve it. I have tried to repair it with with Ontrack and registry Mechanic but nothind happpens.
I can run the windows but have problem with installation of some programs.
Any help are appreciated

I suggest you format the drive and reinstall windows. If windows won't finish installing after a format, you likely have a hardware problem.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

You can get these type of problems when the CD starts failing. Try a cleaning kit and see if things get better.
And from your description it sounds like you could do with a reinstall of the OS. But would probably be better if you cleaned the HD, then got it working and put the install stuff on the HD for the install.

I have tried my dvd-player as its the master drive with other cds and there is no problem with the hard drive. The Windows media player have recently downloaded from Microsoft and it keeps on giving the same message with CAB file problem.
I have ran some programs to fix registry and it is working fast enough now. There are no crashes nor any serious problems, except that I can't install some programs.
Before I formatted the drive I was hit with some viruse but my Norton mangaed to track and delete them. But since then my pc wasn't functioning well.
My win98 cd was in the drive when I was hit by viruses, is it possible that they could have damaged some part of the cd?

If you have room on your hard drive, you might want to copy the files in the Win98 directory on your install CD to a Win98 directory on your hard drive. This makes it easier for programs to find the .cab files from Win98 w/o having to keep the install CD handy. You don't have to copy the files in the sub-folders under Win98 unless you have generous amounts of free HD space as they will rarely be needed.
. While installing programs you may have to point them to the Win98 directory on your HD to find the .cab files. If you want, I can run a set of MD5 hashes on the files on my install disk and you can see if yours match - one way to check for a corrupt CD.

Find and Delete WININIT.EXE and WININIT.INI on your HDD
replace with new fresh ones
use SFC;

Start > Run SFC (System File Checker)
use the "Extract one file from installation disk"
Enter the file name (Wininit.exe - say)
Click START
the rest is intuitive

"Restore from" - navigate to the .cab files whether on CDROM - on CDROM in the <driveletter>:\WIN98 folder - on HDD usually C:\WINDOWS\Options\cabs folder)

"Save file in" - navigate to the folder where the file belongs.)
Wininit.exe belongs in C:\WINDOWS

one or the other May NOT be found...don't worry

Uninstall any references in ADD/Remove Programs to Windows Media
check in Internet Explorer in ADd/remove as well --> choose IE and Tools click Add/Remove - then choose ADD Component
If Windows Media is one - Deselect it
