after installing a few things, I rebooted my system. right after seeing the introductory XP screen (before the login screen), my computer bluescreened with a message something like 'error reading from file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\DEFAULT'. I couldn't tell exactly what it said, due to my computer rebooting almost instantaneously.

From the recovery console, I moved "default" to "default.bak", and then tried copying "default.sav" to "default". This worked, and I was able to boot just fine. I'm wondering (a) what could have caused this problem and (b) if my solution didn't create more problems than it solved. I really have no idea what I was doing, really, and could use the opinion of somebody who knows a bit more than I do. Liam Morley

sounds like your ntldr file was corrupt usually if you install win2k after you have installed winxp in a dual boot situation win2k over rights the ntldr file and you will get that same error easy way to fix this is replace the ntldr file w/ the file from winxp or whichever os u were using Thanks, PAUL

Just a suggestion -- if you want to have a fair shot at seeing those exciting error messages, shut off the Auto-reboot "feature" (god, that annoys me, what a stupid idea):

Control Panel, System, Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup & Recovery, and un-check Automatically Restart.

This way you can read the error and take appropriate steps.

I think this is how M$ was able to claim "fewer BSODs" in 2K and XP -- the same number of errors happen, but you don't get to see em!

hehe:) well I understand the idea for the reboot.. for example if you were (for some reason) running XP/2k in a server environment, and a BSOD occurred for absolutely no reason at all in the middle of the night (which probably would happen). ;) Liam Morley

oh, and btw... this is coming from a fresh install of XP, without an upgrade, and I'm not currently running any other operating systems on this box (and haven't been since I reformatted my drives). Liam Morley
