i have a duron at 850 Ghz it works fine with the case off but when the the case is in and the temperature gets over 55 degrees it suts down, i have a a cooler on it from an AMD XP 2 Ghz and a case cooler but it still with no use, ahyone have any ideea how can i resolve this problem?

Did you apply any thermal paste when you attached the heatsink to the cpu? If it was only the thermal pad that came with the heatsink you may want to remove it,clean the surfaces and apply a quality thermal paste. The PSU fan should be exhausting air out at the back of the PC. Can you feel a nice draught of air coming from this? Maybe the fan's not turning, or only turning over very slowly? Either replace fan, or complete PSU if you don't feel lucky... (High voltages may still be present inside a PSU even though it's switched off). You say you have a case cooler. Where is this located and in which direction is it blowing?

the CPU fan, the case fan and and the AC transformer fan works fine, in fact the temp is abut 55 degree when it's shuting down... in win 98 it takes about 10 min to overheat but in win XP it can take days until the temp gets to 55. but in XP it doesn't shut down it just freezes.

A temp of 55 deg C is not over-dramatic, although we all strive for something lower. You stated originally that with the case off, it all ran ok. (We'll assume this refers to both W98 and XP). If this is still true, then is hot air being trapped at the top of the case, or not being shifted from around the CPU? This through-flow of air sounds like the issue that you need to be addressing in order to solve your problem... I also wonder how accurately your system is reporting this temp. Is there a parameter in your BIOS which is set to shutdown at that temp?

In BIOS there's no option to shut down the comp at that temperature, only some parameters that shows me the CPU temp and system temp. My wonder is that if i put the case on and i'm XP it shuts down (some time the image freezes) after 5-6 hours and in win 98 this happens in 10 min. Is win98 a worse system in managing the CPU? It works it harder? With case off i have no problem in any system.

Looks to me to be an air flow problem.....get one blowing in front and one sucking out at the back(near chip) I think you have answered the question yourself when you say its fine with case off. Some free air flow I think would do it. If your unsure....Dont do it!
