hi,
I have a hl-dt-st rw gcc-4241N CD-WRiter\DVD-ROM combo with my HP Pavilion ze4400 laptop .

only since recently - I cannot read cd's that I've burned from this writer - or a different writer. It reads original cd's such as AOL etc.

When I put in a burned cd (with like data and stuff) - the cd spins in the drive for a bit - there is something a 'chugging' noise - then the icon on the D: drive in My Computer doesn't change - when I click on D: drive - it says Please insert a disk into Drive D:

It is very perplexing - yesterday - just for a few minutes - it worked - but then i took the cd out - then put it back in and it doesn't work ...

have you tried "cleaning" your cd drive?

next time you burn the cd, slow the speed down to like half the speed your burning and see if that fixes the problem. If so your burning to fast and your computers not keeping up and your getting errors. Happens with mine so I burn at half speed.

Have you recently installed and uninstalled any programs like nero, roxio, itunes? Your problem could be leftover drivers and parts of other programs.
Also check your ide channels in device mgr and see if they are set to use dma if available.
