I am trying to install Cyberlink Power DVD 5.5 on my new Dell XPS computer With Windows Media Center Addition.
Half way through the installation it stops every time and I get this error message.

The instruction at “0x7c911c48 referenced memory at “0xfffffff8” the memory could not be read.

Everything else installed fine, and the computer is running great; anyone know how I can get around this, I tried installing version 4, it will install but not run.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Some general tips until you get more pertinent advice.

Make sure there are no other applications running.
Hopefully you have at least 512MB of RAM, 1GB even better.
Turn off any antivirus programs running for this installation. If your use cable or dsl for you internet access, disconnect, especially if you turn off your AV. (Do it in Network connections).

Make sure you have ran a good AV and an anti spyware program (or 2) before doing the install. Nasty spyware can use up lots of your memory. I've had good results using Microsoft Spyware beta for a spyware remover and immunizer.

You might also try reseating the RAM stick. It might even be bad RAM. There are good free online scans to check the condition of your physical memory. There are a few of them. Here's one:
or put memtestor memtest86 in a google search

Is it a single setup install file, or bundled on a CD with a selection of other installers, which are all run by another installer, which auto starts from the CD? Did that make sense? To get PowerDVD installed, you have install DVDsolution too, the two are tied together.

Sometimes this type of problem may occur because of faulty or corrupt entries in the registry referring to PowerDVD and left over from other failed installs. Again, sometimes, removing them from the registry may help.

Relating to the actual error message, try these.

explorer.exe application error -XP -right click on file

A couple of RAM testers.

I gave up on it, but in the process of trying to install it I have screwed up the decoder for Windows Media Center.

Now I get an error message when I try and run a DVD from there.

When I ran Microsoft’s decoder checking utility it says I need to update my decoders.

Does anyone know how to restore the default decoders in Windows XP Media Center Addition? I can’t seem to find anyplace to download the default Windows decoders.

Computer is a new Dell XPS with 2 Gig of ram and a Geforce 7800XL video card.

You could try using System Restore to go back in time.

It might be that you need something like PowerDVD to be able to play DVDs in Media Center.

What error message are you getting when you try to play them?

Hi Linney

I ran the Microsoft Decoder check utility and it says that "There are no decoders installed on this computer."

I assume that in having the problem with Power DVD the decoders became uninstalled.

Before I tried to install Power DVD I could run a DVD movie directly in Media Center.

It did not have all the options I had with Power DVD on my old computer. That's why I tried to install it.

I'll check out the sites that you posted and see if I can find what I need.

Thanks for the help.

Mike

PS.

I am reluctant to use System Restore because I play WOW on my computer and I discovered in the past that it does something that causes a problem with their updater and forces you to download the entire 225 Mg patch the next time the update.

I did this twice before I figured out what the problem was and I have a dialup (can't get DSL) connection.

Well I finally got it to work.

I had to download and install the decoders from Nvidia, and I am going to have to pay for them (I'm using the free trial) but it works.

I downloaded and installed the codecs from Microsoft but no luck there.

I know that the decoders were on my computer before I tried to install Power DVD but I can't find them now. I reinstalled every driver package that came with my computer and it didn't help, but the problem is solved; now I can move on to something else.

Glad you have sorted it. Can you leave a note of what you actually downloaded (codec filenames etc.) and the link you used to get the download.

This type of information may help the next person who comes upon this thread.
