I am trying to ugrade my Oracle 9i database from version 9.2.0.1 to 9.2.0.6 via patch 3948480.

When running the Oracle installer and trying to install the patch onto my Oracle home directory I get errors saying it cannot proceed due to running services which need to be stopped for it to continue. The services list it gives is very long and includes services which I'm sure I must need to keep running, such as:

workstation
terminal services
DCOM server process launcher
DHCP client
DNS client
COM+ Event System
+ about 30 others.

Has anyone else ever had this. Is it a problem? Something I'm doing wrong? or should I really have to shut down all these services?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Hi thanks for the reply.

I have actually stopped all Oracle services. None of them are running at all.

Its OK I have managed to find a resolution to this on metalink. I've posted this below for anyone who might be interested. Thanks "sem" for responding.

Symptoms
Upon attempting to apply 9.2.0.6 patchset to an Oracle 9iR2 Oracle Home on a Windows XP - the OUI is halting requesting that all services on XP be stopped.

Cause
This is a Windows XP specific issue which is documented under <BUG:3640779>INSTALL OF RDBMS PATCH ON WINDOWS XP , REQUEST THAT ALL SERVICES ON XP BE STOPPED
According to the Bug, it is supposed to be fixed in 9.2.0.6 - but still exists.

Solution
To workaround this issue, please execute the following steps:
===========================================

The actual problem is related to ora*.dlls and oci*.dlls which are currently in use whilst the patchset is being applied:-

- Please rename all the dlls beginning with ora*.dll and oci*.dll in the OH\bin directory.
- reboot the PC
- restart the patchset install
