I am intalling a program which required right-clicking on a .inf file then select "Install" . But in my system ( Win 98 SE) , I did not see "Install" in the context menu !

What's going on ? Some system files corrupted ? Please explain and suggest a solution...

Thanks

Hello, zaidulon.

Click out Start | Settings | Folder Options. Under the File Types tab, locate the Setup Information (.Inf) file. Edit. Under the Actions window, press New button. Edit the windows opened.

Action :-
Install

Application used to perform action :-
C:\WINDOWS\rundll.exe setupx.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132

(Care the case-sensitive parameters after setupx.dll, and No Space between the comma(,) and InstallHinfSection)

Press Ok and Ok. You will have the necessary settings in the registry taken care of and get the rightclick Install. Only, leave the existing default action open (with notepad) as such, never set the default action to Install---that would be an easy invitation to mistaken doubleclick.

Thank you very much Tsuji! Your instruction is just superb and it worked like a charm...

What references would you recommend to deal with config. problems in Win 98 ?

Thanks,

Hello, zaidulon.

Glad you've got it work out. You ask me what the references I recommend to deal with config problems in Win 98. I've the same query as you have and struggle with the issue on a case-by-case basis as everybody else. It is so complex that I doubt without the setup made by default as a reference point, nobody in the world can ever get the thing up and running from ground zero by a personal effort in a lifetime.

My best recommendation is that to surf often the MS' knowledge base and Technet, and use their search wizzard for concrete problems. It is a pain at the start and the pain, I assure you, will last practically forever. But, in the long run, you earn solid info and gain perspicacity.

I won't bore you down more on this triviality. Happy computing...
