Hey folks,

have serious problem here, have a workgroup running here, but can't seem to get the last workstation on there.

Symptoms:
all machines are running windows 2000 professional, all machines are configured with a static IP (169.254.248.xx) and all are on the same subnet (255.255.0.0). The last workstation however is also setup in the same way (Network card = D-Link DFE-530TX), does not find the network. It sends out a broadcast (all other machines can see it, but cannot access it) and then it 'dies'!?! when you try to browse the network it says it's not accessible, if you then try again it just sees itself!?!

I hope this is enough information, Please H.E.L.P.

thx

How many machines are on the network? If its more than 9-10 you'll have problems as win2k can only handle 10 concurrent connections.

You can have as many machines as you have valid IP's on a subnet. The 10 concurrent connection limit for win2k refers to things like map drives or shared applications. It prevents you from buying win2k professional and using it as a file, application or print server.

I would go back through and double check everything again. Also have you tried connecting another box (one that you know connects to the network) using the the location of the computer that will not connect? That should eliminate any problems in the cabling from computer to switch.

When I'm having a problem like this I usuall find that I have a typo or duplicate IP address, my workgroup name is wrong or I have duplicate a computer name some where along the line.

lifto is probably correct, perhaps your computer's group name is wrong or some setting in your IP is incorrect.

Something is not matching your other PCs.

Or, you have a bad network card. Try replacing the card and see what happens.

(But try a PC you know works on that cable and connection before replacing any hardware, it might be the cable or the connection).

Good Luck CJ

Do you have any type of firewall software installed on that machine? ie. ZoneAlarm. If you do disable it ant see if you can access it from another machine. From what I read in your post other computers on the network can see it but can not access any of the files on it. Also make sure you have file and printer sharing turned on all of the machines and that you do have some sort of share on the none accessable machine. Also I would try switching the sub mask to 255.255.255.0.

I have several things for you to try.

1. Disable any type of firewall software that is installed on the comptuer. ie. ZoneAlarm

2. Make sure all system have file and print sharing turned on and that the none accessable machine does have some sort of share on it.

3. Change the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0

Snapp69,

If you change the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 which masks 24 bits to the Network Id and the rest of the network is using the mask 255.255.0.0 which masks only 16 bits to the Network ID, you will be on different subnets.

Just curious how this could help...

My bad, typo on my part. I meant to say "Change all the subnet masks on all computer to 255.255.255.0. Wasnt paying attention to what I was typing. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks all, but the problem is solved.... it was a broken network card..... :(

thx anyway
