After the Comcast tech came and installed the cable modem (no software), on my WinXP partition, everything went pretty well. I then re-booted, in order to start my Win98SE partition, but it won't start; keep getting a BSOD. Checked the "boot.ini" file and found there were no changes. It will start in Safe Mode, but didn't find anything obviously wrong there. Any help would be appreciated.

Before the cable modem activation, this dual-boot system worked fine,

How is the cable modem installed (eg, does it plug into a usb or network port).

If 98 will boot in safe mode, have you tried step-by-step boot? (might get idea which driver is causing BSOD)?

wolluf,

Thanks for replying. The cable modem is connected to a NIC card (Netgear FA311). I booted into W98 in safe mode and disabled the NIC. This then allowed me to re-boot to W98 normally, (did have to adjust monitor settings). Now I'm wondering if I should remove the NIC card from Device Manager, and then re-boot, allowing Windows to add it again. Should I disconnect the cable modem when trying this? Thanks for any thoughts on this,

Sounds like a good plan- allowing windows do detect it again. Before doing so, make sure you have the most recent drivers from the netgear web site. Also, when prompted for the driver files it can't find - don't "skip" them - you have to browse back to the win98 cd (I think). I installed a few of these cards a while ago and the installation is a little peculiar.

Thanks for the input. I do have the most recent drivers, and have copied the W98SE disk to a separate partition. I believe it should work, I at least hope it will.

Also, if it doesn't, post back with the exact error message displayed on the BSOD. It definitely sounds like a problem with the NIC and nothing the tech did under XP. Now, it might be that the tech installed the Netgear card for you. In that case, it makes sense that it isn't working right off the bat in 98. Uninstalling/reinstalling should do it.

Thanks, will do that. I was the one who installed the NIC, can't blame Comcast. Will let you know.
