problem adding domains for SMTP

I have configured the recipient policy (days ago) to add the SMTP domain as @domainname.com with the box check to receive mail for that domain. However when I telent into it to test, I get:
550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for user@domainname.com

Did you set up the proper DNS records for the domain?

So you can't receive or send mail for the new domain? If you send mail to the new domain, do you get undeliverables back? When you telnetted into the server, were you trying to send mail to the domain or send mail from the domain?

If I send the SMTP connections to a 5.5 server in the same site, the mail flows to the correct users homed on the 2000 server. If i send the SMTP connections to the 2000 server that they are homed on, I get the error that I originally posted.
