I am currently using a BEFW11S4 Router. I have shared a directory on one of the pc's running XP home. File sharing and Printing for Microsoft Networks is enabled on both PC's (the second is a Windows 2000 machine. I the directory to be shared by right clicking on it a checking the properties on it (the icon for sharing is on the directory. After doing this I realized,

I am unable to access the other pc. I can not ping the pc with the shared file by computer_name or IP address.

I checked the IP address of the PC I am trying to access by running ipconfig at the command prompt and it has the IP address of the router. I checked the ip address being assigned by the router in the DHCP setting of the router. I am also unable to ping the address the router assisgned.

Can someone please put me on the right track....

Thanks

Not sure I can help because I'm a little bit confused by the post. First, what computer is having the problem getting to the router? Is it the XP or 2000 system that is having the problem?

I'd start by going to the troubled machine. In a command prompt, try to ping 127.0.0.1 to be sure TCP/IP is running correctly (I'm sure it is but you never know). If you don't get a reply, that's a problem. I have to believe you'll get a reply.

When that's done, and assuming it works, run IPCONFIG and get the IP Address that it returns. If you're using the default router settings on the Linksys, it should be in the 192.168.1.X network. If it's in the 169.254.x.x range, then for some reason it's not grabbing the IP address from the router. This could be because of a bad cable, wrong (crossover?) cable, or other problem that you'd have to troubleshoot.

If the address is in the correct range, try to ping the IP address of the router.

Go ahead and post back with the results from the stuff above and I (or someone else) will be able to help you out a little more.
