Hi Guys.

I've got a customer with quite an odd requirement. The customer would basically like users to answer calls ringing on their phones, but the mic to go on Mute when calls are answered. He would like users to manually unmute the mic everytime they answer a call. i guess the requirement is to avoid situations where someone accidentally answers calls and carried on having a conversation with college while the phone is off-hook.

You can imagine the level of privacy we're talking here. Do any Avaya 9600 series handsets provide features like Push to Talk? Or is there a way of Muting a call everytime its answered?

You talk about privacy and answering calls on the speaker!
You can disable the speaker on the phone but the user cannot enabled it then.
You better use headsets and auto answer.
you cannot disable the mic without pressing the button.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

Push to Talk is very different from what you are describing so will get you very confused answers (its typically found on wireless/mobile sets and emulates the walkie-talkie style pus the button when you want to talk function).

What you are describing is nearer call screening or having calls answered with group listen auto-enabled.

But I can't get motivated for anyone so silly as to treat their callers this way.

Interestingly enough...

There was a SAP code for a PTT handset (i.e. handpiece rather than for a complete handset) for other handset types (46xx in particular)

So it isn't that stupid a question, adn I can envisage situations where this may be a requirement (Brokerage houses for example) In effect, the user just has to get used to pressing the button to turn on the speech path...

Can't help more than that - I suggest you speak to your Distributor. In teh worst case, potentially you coudl source soem second hand 46 series phones and then source the PTT handpieces.

Take Care

Matt
I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
My wish has come true. I no longer know how to use my telephone.

Yes, but the 'Push to Talk' feature is 'Push' every time you want to talk even after you have answered, a small but important difference. Maybe its the exactly right for this user but also it could be more than needed. However, nice to know there is a handset for it on normal phones as well (hardware solutions still have there place).
