Meridian 8-24 System...found out recently that our receptionist "listens in" on most calls she has transferred between outside parties (both callers external to office system). Wondering now if she can also "listen in" on calls between an outside caller and my internal extension, after she transfers the incoming call to my phone? Also, can she silently "break in" to any conversation...internal or external? Is there any way around this...short of letting her go? Can't find a manual for our system. Thanks!

You can access Line programming in Configuration and set Auto Privacy to Y on all lines. I'd also give her a warning that she will be fired for any further eavesdropping.

exsmogger...thanks, but how does this stop her from staying on the line after she transfers calls between 2 external phones? Caller "A" dials the office looking for caller "B". She dials caller "B"'s cell phone and then connects "A" with "B"...then listens. Does setting this to "Y" prevent any other functionality that may be required? Many thanks!!

that scenario sounds like she is doing a conference, if she uses the transfer feature, once she completes the transfer she will be out of the call.

Thanks BombOne...I assume you mean "out of the call" only if the "Auto Privacy" is set on all lines?

its been a long time since I worked on an 8x24, but generally the privacy setting shouldn't apply to a transfer, she should press transfer, dial the transfer to number, wait until the person answers then press transfer again, or join in the display, then she is out of the call, no matter what the privacy setting is at. Privacy applies to the lines them selves, so if she has line 001 appear on her set, and someone is on it, she can press it and listen to the call, if privacy is off on that line.

I'm going to do some studying and testing I think. Anyone know where I can get a programming guide. All I can seem to locate is the phone user's guide. Thanks again!!!!

If she's using a link button to transfer the calls off premise, then you don't have a lot of control over the situation. I might play a radio in her office, and tell my outside staff to listen for it in the background as an indicator that she hasn't hung up.

RikRodgers....thanks for that. If that is the case, this seems like a real weakness in that system. Wow.

It's not the system. A flash transfer is a function of the phone lines, not your nortel equipment.

Once auto privacy is set, whoever is on an outside call would have to release the privacy feature to allow another caller on the line. The attendant should be instructed to use the transfer key, and not the conference feature, if indeed this is what's occurring.

Guess I shouldn't read so fast. After a conference is established with 2 external parties, try having the operator press the hold button to drop from the conference. She may not realize that she doesn't need to stay on the call to keep the parties conferenced.

exmogger...no, she knows perfectly well how to "work" the system. My goal is to guarentee privacy for everyone, but it's not looking good.

Google is your friend
Modular DR5 Installer Guide

You should find out the exact process she uses.

If you need to find out if she is a spy lol
then install an Algo recorder:

You would need to have her digital port go to this box then to your PC then back to her phone.
i.e put a dual jack in your office to act as the in and back out.

If you hear conversations and she is not part of it then she is a spy.

There is a price to keep the privacy maybe ugrading to a newer system with a PRI and DID, I do like Curlycord's idea of a recorder.
