When running a Window 2003 defrag, I noticed the exchange file PRIV1 has got over 1500 fragments. I understand we cannot defrag this file while exchange is online, but can I shutdown IS and perform a disk defrag without using the ESUTIL?

Reason for asking is we noticed the backup take a long time to complete now-a-day!

ESEUTIL does a lot more than just defrag the files, if you have recently removed any large mailboxes you will want to use eseutil because it will also reduce the size of the database. A regular disk level defrag will not do this.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Thanks Mark.

Yes I do know ESUTIL do a lot more, but the about of free space (according to EVENT log) is not that much, so I do not have the requirement to shrink the PRIV1, but I do not know if I should concern about the fragmentation of the PRIV1 file itself from the file system point of view, not exchange point of view.

kornhill,
priv1.edb can be fragmented inside - Exchange defrags it automatically.
the disk management system will fragment priv1.edb. To defrag it you could stop all exchange services, rename priv1.edb and copy it as priv1.edb.

But I wouldn't recommend doing anything at all.
