I joined a new company and noticed that in event viewer that the priv.edb had a gig of fragmentation. The online defrag was never setup correctly so I set it to once a day at 4AM. Since that time a month ago the priv.edb is now only 328mg fragmented.

Is this due to the online defrag correcting the problem, or is it a natural occurance for the priv.edb to have dynamic ammounts of defragmentation that would go from 300mgs to over a gig and back???

Thanks much.

You may want to increase the time window for IS maintenance so that the defrag process can complete. Otherwise, what you are seeing is normal.

Hi fuego007,

Thanks for the answer. I have it running everyday at 4AM.. .. what would be an improvement on this? Its normal for the priv.edb to grow and shrink like this then?

I want to also Thank You for your write up on moving an older exchange server to a newer machine. I will face doing this from backup tapes in the near future and am a little concerned since it is from one domain in another country to ours here in the states, and I'm afraid of all the hidden gotchas... DNS, firewall, etc.
