Hi,

I have a HP Laserjet 4, and since a couple of weeks an Intel NetportExpress™ PRO printserver (internal card). I have been trying to install this printserver in my private network, but until now it failed.
Problem is that the server is listed as "unknown type" in Intel Netport Manager (v05.41). I can ping to the printserver, TCP/IP and NetBEUI are enabled, but the server keeps coming up as "unknown". And then it cannot be accessed by the Netport software: reset, configuration, info, etc. doesn't work, it comes back with the error message:

"Communication with this Netportexpress Printserver failed. It may be in the middle of a reset operation, or there may be a problem with network communication. Please retry this operation again in 20 seconds".

The funny thing is that when I take the printer (+ printserver) to work, and hook it up to the Novell network, the printserver is recognized and I can configure it as I would like to have it, with the exactly the same Netport software. But when I take it back home and connect it to my Windows 98 network, it still comes up with 'unknown type'.
Help!

can you telnet into Intel printservers?? With HP Jetdirects there are a number of options that you can configure by telnetting to the IP Address... may be worth a look on your Intel....

Check and see what protocols you are running on both networks. Add the ones at home that you have at work and see if that will help. My guess is that IPX/SPX is how you are able to see it at work and it is not installed on your pc at home. Just a guess..
Good Luck.. A+ MCP

I'm with DeanSpencer on this one. Most likely needs IPX/SPX installed, or possibly the TCP/IP config is wrong.

Thanks for the advices, yesterday I was able solve the problem. I took the printer to work, hooked it up to the network and configured it like I would like to have it at home. When I took it home again, it was now visible in my private network, and it also showed the correct type in the netport software. Printing works fine now as well.
I am not sure why it works now correctly, my best guess is that it has to do with the domain setting. By default the domain setting of the printserver is "WORKGROUP", and this setting is not changed when the printserver is reset to factory defaults. My network at home has another domain name. When I changed the domain setting of the printserver (at work) to the one I use at home, it was visible in the netport software at work as 'unknown type', but at home it showed now the correct type.
Anyway, thanks for your suggestions, it took quite some time but finally I have a working printserver at home!
