Printing vouchers with sequential numbers

I have been asked to print gift vouchers for someones business, I would like each voucher to have a code, likely some letters followed by 0001, 0002 and so on. The plan is I would give them a list of the numbers, and they would score them off as the vouchers got used (to save anyone rtying to duplicate them etc). I created the voucher as a png image, and I was wondering what the best way would be to do this. I was thinking perhaps in word as a mail merge or label run, inserting a text field over each image and someone set the number to increment by one on each instance of the image. Perhaps I could create the list of numbers, and pull it from that, then I would have the list and the vouchers to hand over?

Thanks

John
