I have a PC with XP with a printer shared out on its USB port - it is in the default workgroup.

I also have a laptop connected via wireless which is on a domain (used elsewhere) which will connect to the printer (asks for username and password). However on reboot the printer doesn't connect back to the server share and I have to delete the printer and add it back on.

Is there anyway round this so the printer doesn't need deleting and re-adding?

I'm not sure if this would work, but you could give it a shot:

You could add the user account from the laptop to the admin group on the PC with the printer installed...I've never tried this with a PC that is in a workgroup, but try to go into local users and groups on the PC to add your laptop account.

1. Right click on my computer and choose manage
2. Local users & groups
3. Groups
4. Double click power users or administrators
5. Click Add
6. Type in the user account on the laptop -- formatted like this: LAPTOPNAME\USERNAME (ex. WORKLAPTOP\NOAH)
7. When you click okay, you may have issues with the name validating, and that's what I'm not sure about. You may want to connect to the laptop from the PC to establish a connection and connect to a share with the username to test and see if you can validate the user.

Just an idea, let us know how it goes.

When it prompts for username/password, isn't there a check box to save those details?

If not, what if you just try connecting to the actual machine - that password prompt should include a remember my password box. If it does, check it then connect to printer.

Or you could add appropriate details in User Accounts, manage my network passwords?

For Domain member computers the Persistent flag for Net Use commands defaults to No; for Workgroup computers it defaults to Yes.

To restore the current connections at each logon, regardless of future changes, type:
Start, Run, net use /persistent:yes

Now to be sure, repeat the Net Use command for the printer, but include completely the User switch. And most importantly: the /savecred switch. If you are using Simple File Sharing, nothing else needs to be done. If Simple File Sharing is disabled on the computer sharing the printer, use an existing local username or add an additional new local username to that computer and pass the credentials on the net use command line.
