Printing problem with Word98 (missing punctuation)

When printing from a Mac sometimes some punctuation (particularly quotes and apostrophes) is missing.
This is mostly (but not always) when printing a MSWord document (any version) that has originated on a PC. Also is mostly (but not always) when printing from an iMac. Also is only on newer laser printers.
I absolutely cannot find a solution.
Has anyone else come across this problem?

If I recall correctly, I believe this has something to do with Mac/Windows not sharing the symbol font. But I'm not sure.
