Got a bit of a weird one here, and I hope I'm missing something obvious.

I have a workbook with 19 worksheets that make up a nicely formatted report. Each sheet has been set with the "Page 1 of ?" in the centre footer. Altogether there are 27 pages that should printed (some worksheets have more than 1 page) when I print the entire workbook. When I print however it is showing page 1 of 49, and I can't figure out why. There are no hidden worksheets, and when I highlight every sheet and look in print preview, it shows page 1 of 27. Anyone got any ideas?

Have you tried saving the workbook, closing it and re-opening it again, then printing? This should force Excel to re-calculate the active portion of each worksheet and therefore the page numbering.

Tony, thanks but that didn't help. Still printing page 1 of 49.

Do you have the same printer for preview and printing? How many pages are printed, if 47 - are some of them empty? Are the page breaks automatic or forced?
Sometimes in such case it is enough to slightly shrink columns/rows, as the preview can be not quite perfect conversion.
You can also try to reinstall printer driver.

Combo,

Same printer that I preview with that I then print to.
Only 27 pages are printed, which is the amount that I see in print preview.
Page breaks are automatic, and I've adjusted the size of the columns and rows and the adjust to scale on the page setup, with no effect.
I've had the print drivers reinstalled, also to no effect.

Forgot to say earlier using Excel XP if that's any help.

Sorry for silly question, any simple formulas in page header, such as ... Page &[Page] of &[Pages]+20 ?

combo

Nope, just plain old Page &[Page] of &[Pages]

I would test if this happens other machines too, and also, each worksheet page settings, (number of first page etc., print quality). Maybe it would be useful, if possible, to set hard page breaks and print area.
I can't find anything more, I've expected excel to print at least proper number of pages in header/footer.

I've tried on other machines with the same results. I've tried to set hard page breaks and still the same results.
I've tried throwing the PC out of the window...well not yet, but I'm feeling that way!!

Thanks for your suggestions though.

Molby,
I can understand why - these kinds of errors get you mad, don't they!!

A long shot, but when did you last check 'office update'? I've been reading through some articles on the Microsoft Knowledge Base to see if they've come across this before when it occurred to me they may have published a fix for this problem - you never know!!

Tony,

I've checked and I have the latest release of SP3 for Excel 2002. I've also tried searching the Knowledge Base but couldn't find anything relating to this.

Just one of those little quirks that keeps us on our toes.

Molby,
indeed.

Tell me, have you defined any print areas on any of the sheets yourself? Also, I'm curious what type of printer you are printing to (make/model)?

Tony,

I start off with: ActiveSheet.PageSetup.PrintArea = "", before I define any other page settings, so that the print area is blank. The printer is a Hewlett Packard Laserjet 4000 N
