Hi
SunOS eurfinunx002 5.8 Generic_108528-18 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-4

Anyone know of any admin software for solaris for kyocera administrating printers? Currently we use JetDirect installed on solaris box which works fine for hp printers but does not recognise kyocreas. Does anyone know of similar software for kyoceras. if so where to get it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

We currently use HP printers, but our IT department has made the executive decision to buy in Kyocera printers (as they have cheaper running cost!!).

Probably asking the obvious, but can't the Kyocera emulate an HP printer?

when i try and add printer through hp jetadmin it throws up an error!

any ideas

I think you may need to add an HP-compatible card - but they probably come expensive from Kyocera (which rather defeats the IT bean-counters' original objective, doesn't it?)! On the other hand, is there not a menu to show you the emulation currently in use?

i can get the printer to work using the pcl created for the hp printers, but from the config point of view i am snookered as hp software on the server will not allow me to configure of even see the printer.

I can dump from unix to the printer no problem. My boundry is the kyocera admin software for adding/amending/deleting printers to the spooler without having to use lpadmin which is cumbersume!

create the printer with lpadmin and use the netstandard interface! here is an example

thanks for reply, but i was aware of standard interface and was hoping someone could tell me if they were aware of any kyocera admin software which we can install on the server to administer the printers

Kyocera Mita printers and digital copiers are compatible with most JetAdmin software. Most printer manufacturers' network interfaces will support the standard SNMP Printer MIB for these kinds of tool like Web JetAdmin or Markvision. However, I'm not certain if you are trying to run Web JetAdmin or some other JetDirect card configuration tool for Solaris.

Kyocera Mita has a similar tool to Web JetAdmin called KM-NET Viewer, however it is not supporting Sun Solaris in the current release. We expect one to be available later this year that will support multiple UNIX/Linux platforms. Typical network administration with KM-NET Viewer allows the administrator to see all the Kyocera Mita printers on the network and modify printer configuration settings.

Regarding basic administration of a Kyocera Mita printer, most of the models with network cards (IB-21/IB-22) support administration though a web based interface. This may be what you are looking for in terms of configuring the printers. Just open a browser and HTTP to the IP address of the printer. If you don't know it, you'll need to print a status page from the front panel menu of the device to get the DHCP address and MAC addresses. This is useful anyway, in order to lock down the device to a specific IP address.

All Kyocera Mita printers support some level of PostScript, so integration on Solaris should be pretty straight forward if using CUPS. You can easily get the PPDs from Just look in the Database Status at the bottom for recent changes.

If you have additional questions, concerns, please let us know in this thread, or contact a support representative at Kyocera Mita...

Don't know about others, but this seems to me to be good customer service, and therefore worth a star!

thanks for your help. But i have tried adding a kyocera printer through the following program which errors by saying unable to contact printer, do you have a link where i can download KM-NET either beta or new release so i can possibly test:-

Sorry, at this time, we don't have a separate utility for easily doing #1, #2 or #3 as mentioned above on Solaris 2.x, however #2 can be done over any web browser.

My guess is that HP's utility is probably not designed to work with third party printer's network cards in terms of card configuration, so other features like queue setup are not possible.

So, for configuration of the Kyocera printer, you need to connect via HTTP (port 80) to the printer to configure what options are available for our network interface.

For queue management on Solaris, you should refer to system administrator documents from Sun for Solaris printer management, since I'm not a guru in this area. But in essence you need to setup a TCP/IP direct printing queue (port 9100) to the printer. This should be no different than setting up any other TCP/IP print queue. (Although probably a big hassle).

For Network Monitoring, we don't currently offer a Linux or Solaris version of KM-NET VIEWER nor can we offer any beta version at this time for this platform. However we do offer a the Windows based version of KM-NET VIEWER that may be used.

However, the standard SNMP printer MIB (management information block) is supported by most manufacturer's network cards including ones from Kyocera. This is technospeak for the database of settings in the printer and status information.

HP's WebJet Admin or Lexmark MarkVision's utilities should be able to communicated with our devices at some basic compatibility level, however, we make no recommmendation on this matter. We are not certain about their older utilities specific to Solaris.

We apologize, since we don't consider ourselves Solaris 2.x experts or for that matter any Solaris running on Ultrasparc - we've only done minimal support for Solaris 9 running on Intel. However, I hope this still helps point you in the right direciton. :~/

thanks for your help.. its a shame kyocera dont support this kind of functionality
