Hi,

I would like to add a printer to my Windows 98 OS. The problem is that i would like to install a printer on a COM port or as a file printer (because when i install it as an LPT1/2 printer, my settings for a DOS-based program are overridden). When i choose the "File" option or the COM1 option, i receive an error message asking me to "Try again" and if the problem continues i should contact someone important...
Any help is greatly appreciated...

Arif

If the printer is a parallel port printer, you'll need to choose LPT1 or LPT2, what dos program is this? Could you give more info on what settings are being overwritten? This might be solved with a batch file,

Matt

Matt,

Thanks for your repsonse.
The DOS program is called ShopKeeper, and I use it as my "cash register" program, to scan items that a customer would like to purchase, it adds tax etc etc.
The problem with the printer is that I don't really want to add a printer, I have to add a printer so that I can use a command in Access called OpenReport (I use the acprev option, which uses the preview window to show you your report, but requires at least one default printer installed). So ShopKeeper has a printer installed, but Windows 98 doesn't. Then when I install a printer with Windows 98, ShopKeeper doesn't print because it is using Windows 98 settings, as oppose to its own settings...
Hope that makes it clearer.

What happens when you install a "Generic/text only" printer in Win98, does it still over-ride the DOS program?

The test continues...

pudda,

The Generic/Text-only printer, is that the same as choosing the FILE option when i'm asked what port i would like to use, the options are, "COM1, COM2, FILE and LPT1"
I've tried using FILE, and I receive some "Restart your system, contact . . . if the problem persists".
But i've restarted, and the same problem occurs.
Maybe my OS is flawed?
