Im using windows 2000 server, there is one 3 parallel port jet direct however i can only get one of the paralell ports working at a time. How do i add all 3 printers?

Adam

You would be better off making then all IP printers using jetdirect. IP printing is easier to manage and install on a users pc.

i have done that but one it is a jet direct 500x which connects 3 printers. when i try and add the 2nd or third printer it tells me it is already in use.

Are these jetdirect plugged into the network AKA RJ475 connectors? This is what I am refering to, you will bypass using the parallel port. Also are these printers in different locations?

Yes, it is connected via the rj45, i know this because i can use either parallel 1 or 2 or 3 but not all 3 at the same time. the jd 500x has 3 ports in the back for printers. when i try add them in win2k or xp i get 'port already in use' and it doesnt work

If your printers can connect directly to the network through an ethernet connection, then do so. Assign them each an IP address.

add a new printer. when it comes to the port, specify a new port, and make it the type TCP/IP. When the new port window comes up, give it the IP address of your printer. Once the port is assigned, you load the drivers for the type of printer and you're done.

Start, Help. You'll be surprised what's there. A+/MCP/MCSE/MCDBA

Printers are:
HP DesignJet 500 using parallel 1
HP DeskJet 1220c using parallel 2
HP Deskjet 840c using parallel 3

i have tryed the above and when i go to add the second printer it just tells me the port is already in use.

Ok if they are networked in your local lan then you add them to a pc by creating a tcp/ip port with there ip address.

I have tryed that, as stated in my above posts. I then get an error message saying the port is in use.

I have used the hp jet direct printer wizzard and it seems to have sorted the problem.

You need to set the Queue name (if LPR) to LPT1/LPT2/LPT3 or the Port# (if RAW) in the TCP/IP port properties. Or use the HP wizard that does this for you automatically
