printer printing garble with correct driver installed

hi we have a Brother 1250 laser printer that has been working fine now until two days ago. It keeps printing garble, i have tried unistall/re-install several times but still no luck, no new software or hardware has been added. It is a win98 pc and is connected through a printer cable

1) the cable could be broken...
2) loose connection of the cable...
3) printer doesn't recognize protocal in use (ie wrong dip switch settings of the interface in the printer)
4) wrong BIOS setting for Paralell port...
5) wrong settings of printer driver...
6) Printer damaged...
7) paralell port damaged...
8) wrong printer driver...
9) if you use a program to print could be wrong setting of the program in use...
and more of a joke than a real reason: user is dislexic

Sometimes all it takes is unplugging the power cord to the printer for a few minutes and re-plugging it to clear the memory in the printer. I've had to do that in the past. It's worth a shot.

Maybe you need a different font or something. You may need a manual to figure out how the buttons on the front sets up the printer.

This is just a guess.

To all that was suggested earlier I would add:

1. Do a virus scan. Several viri target printers
2. If you installed a remote access program, remove it. PC 2 Go and several others can do this.

bcastner is spot on with his advice to do a virus scan.
Worked on a system that was infected with a BugBear variant the other day, this guy had printing problems similar to yours.

If you do not have a virus then follow the advice given to you by BadBigBen

had similar problems with my psc, never could get it to work right, my problems fixes;
do a virus,trojan,spybot scan;online was a better scan
go to product website and download uninstaller
go to msconfig.startup.uncheck; load startup items
restart.reinstall software
