Hi guys,
Really annoying problem here that I'm trying to fix for a friend.

I am working on a laptop with windows 98 installed and with an EPSON C62 printer.

After the printer was installed my friend was having problems communicating with the printer. The source of this problem has now been fixed. However while trying to fix the problem my friend added a new printer port called epusb1.
This was done from the screen accessed by viewing the printer details.
This printer port is now listed alongside the proper port which is called EPUSB1.
This is causing a problem because we cannot delete the "fake" port because windows still thinks this port is being used. This is presumably because it has the same name as the real port - only is lowercase. If we try to select the real port in the "print to the following port" box then windows still just reverts to the old fake printer port.

It seems we need to delete this printer port from its source so does anyone know where printer ports are stored? I've searched the registry and it doesn't seem to be in there!

Thanks very very much for any help!
Mark.

Although it is relavent to what I have been trying to do, it still doesnt tell me how to remove the fake pronter port that has been entered. Until this is removed it is impossible to select the real port because windows is getting confused.

I think i need to know the location in windows where the printer ports are stored!!

Did you try doing a scanreg /restore?

Mark,
You can't delete a port that is currently selected. You need to change the "Print to the following port" selection to something other than the fake port or real port. Since they are both the same name, Windows is getting confused just as you thought. Select an entirely different port like COM1 for example. Once the change has been applied, then go back in and try to delete the fake port.

Note: Deleting the fake port might also remove the real port. Therefore, be prepared to have to re-add it to the list.

cdogg,
I tried selecting COM1 and then deleting the fake USB port but it still comes up the message "port in use". It is possible for me to delete the real USB port by this method but when the real port is added again it just gets it confused with the fake one again.

any ideas?
thanks

I'll look around and get back to you if I find anything. However, you might want to heavily consider backing up all important data and reinstall Windows. It might actually save you the time of finding the answer you're looking for, and on the bright side start fresh with a clean install. You can first try re-installing Windows on top of itself, which will keep all your applications and drivers intact, but I doubt it will make a difference.
