My printer is a Conon BJC 5000. It beeps seven times when I press the reset button. The light flashes green once and flashes amber seven times. The print heads are locked to the right position and will not come to the middle when I open the front lid. I have checked drivers, cable and A/C connections. Other dot matrix ,etc work on the cable. I am using Windows 98 se on a Dell p2 333.

hardware issue with the printer I would say. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

Not familiar with this particular printer... But does it have a self test facility, like press RESET + POWER ON? I'd agree with Mulga's diagnosis.

I suspect hardware also. Canon tech support wants $10 to take my call. I can open the printer case myself if I just knew what I was looking for--to repair or clean.

It probably needs service - it says a printhead has failed. See:

It could be that the printhead has jammed. If it is out of warranty it may not hurt to take the unit apart, remove the printhead cartridges, re-assemble and try it. A sneaky trick to unclog clogged-up inkjet heads is to fill the bathroom sink with ONE inch of hot water and then touch ONLY the bottom of the head in the water for about 20 seconds. Then PAT the head dry with toilet paper.

Maybe without the cartridge (or a new one installed) the error may clear. No guarantees, however.

If it needs service it probably isn't worth it. HP and (expecially) Lexmark have new printers out now that will cost the same as the repair - and perform better to boot!

Good luck! Your mileage may vary...
