This computer (Windows 2000 Pro) has printed to the network printers up until last Thursday. We (the MIS dept.) changed nothing. If the user changed something they are unaware of what they did. They have 1 local printer and 5 network printers. All the printers can be seen in the Printer folder with the message in the subject for all of the network printers. The network printers can be captured on the DOS command line and can be printed to that way (the local works fine). When you Add Printer you can see the printers on the network but get the message Invalid Name and cannot add the printer. Everything else is fine. All other computers on the network (approx 30 computers) are configured the same way and have no problems printing to the network. TIA for any help with this one.

Fixed it at least for now. Log onto the computer as Administrator, Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. Right click on Print Spool, and then Properties. Click on Stop for the spooler (it will show that it is started). Wait about 10 seconds and then click on Start. I do not know what caused the problem. If it comes back you may see me back here. Thanks for the reply.

Start, Run, net stop spooler
Start, Run, net start spooler

Check the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\restrictanonymous

If the value is "2" change it to "1".

Reboot the computer.

Apparently this key can be modified, sometimes by third party software or MS security updates, resulting in the "Access denied" error, even though one can still print.
