Not sure this is the most relevant forum but couldn't think of any others.
Anyway, I need to capture printing data for users on our network i.e. user, no. pages, size, duplex, colour etc.
Is there a way of doing this either using locally installed printers or print server based?
I know there is a windows print API but my Windows based programming isn't too hot so something out of the box would be nice.

Thanks
Chris

Hi,

Our Windows 2000 server that also functions as our print server prints these details to the windows event log. But something to bear in mind is that if a user does direct IP printing (if allowed) then it will not go through the print sevrer and thus not get picked up by the event log. Here is an example of the data we get from the "system" section of our server event logs. (with IP and user details opbviously removed for security reasons)

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Print
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10
Date: 14/10/2003
Time: 14:02:17
User: username
Computer: print_server1
Description:
Document 19, Microsoft Word - Policy.doc owned by user-blah was printed on HP Color LaserJet 5500 PS - 835 via port IP_xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Size in bytes: 1120848; pages printed: 2

I hope this helps.
