Printer attached to a XP workstation. Should I use NDPS or Queue base?

I would like to networked an HP LJ 6L printer. It is hooked to a XP pro workstation in a NewWare 6 environment. Therefore, I am planning to use the workstation as a Print Server.

I tried both, queue and NDPS, with no success so far.

I created a printer, printer server and queue with NDS Admin. Then I made the corresponding associations. I created a group of users with the appropriate rights to SYSUBLIC. I started PSERVER.NLM at the console and NPRINTER.EXE at the workstation. The status of the print server shows “running”, but the print job never executes. I did this, a long time ago, under a NW 4.11/ win95 (NPTWIN95.EXE) with no problem. What am I missing now? Is there some other nlms or executables I need to run for NW6/winXP?

I also tried to add this printer through NDPS. I added a Printer Agent, under NDPS Manager. I used the IP/port1 of the workstation it is hook to, using an HP gateway and it did not work. Then I tried IPX, and it did not work. I tried the Novell gateway. I restarted the Broker and the Manager. I tried to add it as a Public and then as a Controlled access printer, but still with negative results. What do I need to do?

What is the most effective way and what are the steps to make a printer attached to a workstation work?

i personaly beleive running it from a pc is suicide

buy a jet direct - then use ndps

queues arent a good way to go - ndps or ipp is best

Nprinter for Windows NT will not work with Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Novell decided not to develop NTprint for Windows 2000 because NDPS printing is preferred for NetWare printing.

Do as Terry suggests, get a print server box like JetDirect. I don't think you can get an internal one for a 6L, so an external box will be needed. They can run up to $400, but I have seen them sell for under $200

If you're hellbent on using the xp system as a print server, why not just use microsoft sharing?

NOTE: NPTWIN95.EXE was never written to run on NT/2000/XP operating systems.

NPRINTER.EXE from SYSUBLIC run from a DOS box has been known to work but is not stable. PSERVER.NLM needs to be loaded on the server and the NPRINTER.EXE need to be run from a DOS box, like in a legacy printing environment. Note: NDPS remote printer on IPX Printer agent will not work on Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

Thank you all for the very valuable info. I was aware that the most recomended way to go was by using a JetDirect PS. Unfortunately, right now ($$$) it is not an option.

The microsoft sharing sounds like a good alternative. However, I am going to try NDPS one more time, following the steps of the link mentioned above.
