That portion of the OS that handles the conversion from a text file to the hardware signals out.
In SCO , which is most of what I do, the conversions are handled by (or filtered thru) an interface script file. And that would be the part that would be reporting the error back.
The lp service would get a call like:
lp -dprintername filetoprint -o:raw or some such
and would process the printername script (which would at some point output the filetoprint to the hardware).
