I'm in a quagmire and need some help. I'm attempting to install and run a batch file in Windows XP-Home Ed. so that I can print the contents of folders. I'm following the instructions according to MS Knowledgebase Article 321379. But, as is most often the case, one problem leads to another.

Before I attempted to write and run the batch file, I took the advice of the author and attempted to backup my registry and files. I utilized Knoledgebase Article 302700 which provides guidelines for installing the Backup Utility and creating the backup discs and backup file using the Automated System Recovery Wizard.

Well, I installed the utility, but the utility will not allow me to create the backup file or the discs. I've tried saving these to a floppy disc, a CD-R, CD-RW with no luck. I get an error message indicating that the file cannot be created, or that the path or filename is unacceptable. The Wizard created the filename, so I assume that is not the issue. The only thing I changed was the location where the file(s)would be saved using the "Browse" option. I don't know what else to try.

1) Should I find an alternative means in printing folder documents without taking the above approach or

2) Discover a rather simple solution to this problem that I'm overlooking.

Any help out there?

Thanks in advance,
Bob

Looking quickly, I found one recommending this:
BTW, you can't use ASR in XP Home, but you can manually run the backup program and backup the 'system state'. Or just open regedit and export the registry key in question (or the entire registry) to a file that you can then burn to cd.

Smah,
Thanks for the suggestions. As is typically the case, Microsoft's solution is not very helpful, and a whole lot more involved. Karenware looks like the best option.

XP can write data to CD-RW, but not directly from NTBackup. However, you can place backup files in the XP CD-RW write subsystem's spooler, which effectively writes the data directly to CD-RW. To add files to the spooler, perform the following steps:

Start NTBackup (go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and click Backup).
Select the Backup tab.
Select the files that you want to back up to CD-RW.
Using NtBackup with XP Cd burning software.

Select File for the type of "Backup destination."
Enter the following file location:

C:\documents and settings\<user name>\Local SettingsApplication Data\Microsoft\CD Burning\Backup.bkf

After you specify the location of your files in the CD-RW cache, right-click the "CD write" icon in Windows Explorer and select "Write these files to CD" to write the backup files to CD-RW.

Make sure the size of your backup doesn't exceed the capacity of your storage media.

linney,
The response is much appreciated. This forum is the best. There is no better place on the web.

Thanks,
Bob
