Can anyone tell me what would be the preference in protocols for a PRI connected to a Nortel CO? SL-1 or NI2?

Is there a reason why I would rather use NI2 instead when talking Nortel to Nortel?

Thanks in advance!

we use sl1 for our nortel to nortel stuff

It's not getting any smarter out there. You have to come to terms with stupidity, and make it work for you.

SL1 protocol is what the CO uses to talk using a DTI, NI2 is the newest standard for PRI, aka: national. If you have a d channel on your circuit, I would specify NI2 to the CO.

To be sure you really need to talk to your carrier to find out what they have set up for you at the CO. For example, we have a PRI to our LD carrier and they specify D250 (DMS-250). Carriers usually won't give you a choice. For example, my local PRIs go to a GTD5 switch, so my only choice is NI2. If my numbers were on the DMS-100 (which happens to sit across the aisle in the CO from the GTD5) I know they insist on D100 protocol.

Thanks for your replies but what I was really looking for was why would I want to switch to NI2 instead of a Nortel Protocol when talking Nortel to NOrtel? Do I get the same things like anti tromboning, MCDN, etc...

I have done it both ways in the past I am just trying to figure out if I should be doing NI2 most of the time and why? In my head I would think that there are some advantages of speaking a Nortel language when connecting two Nortel switches. If I were to connect to M1's by point to point I would do SL1 on both sides. Why wouldn't I do NI2 if its better? Just thinking out loud here.

Thanks again guys!

One reason to do NI2 when talking to a Nortel CO switch is that I believe Caller Name Delivery is only available in the NI2 protocol (25.40B and above).

I've always went NI2 as long as the CO can provide it. I use the SL1 Protocol when doing a private network PBX to PBX.
