prf * .tmp file ?

I'm getting a file on my desktop everytime I turn my computer on. the file is prf*.tmp where the * is various numbers and letters. I delete the file and the next time it is there. If I do not delete the file there is two next time. I open the file in notepad and it is blank. I looked at what is running but can not find anything that is creating these files.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm running windows xp pro and it is logging into a domain server. which is storing the profile.

I am going to guess that they are perfmon counter files. See:
