the "unique" function prevents duplicates on a single field basis, however how do I prevent duplicates across two fields

the particular example is a six digit customer number must be unique at each site, however the same customer number may co-exist at a different site.

any help would be appreciated.

Create a text field large enough to hold the combined contents of both fields. Define a default modification formula for it, using the Combine() function to concatenate the two fields. Validate the field as unique.

Use Fill Field with the same formula to update records that existed before the new field was added.
