I am running a Windows 2000 fileserver in a NT 4.0 domain. What is the best way to prevent users from accidentally deleting folders while allowing them the ability to modify the files under the folder?
Personally, I would instruct them to be careful with file management. Teach them what you can to help them prevent accidental deletions. Also keep a good backup. Possibly implement auditing in case person A deletes person B's file you can prove to person B that person A deleted it.
To allow users to modify files INSIDE a folder while not being able to delete the folder itself, give the principals permissions to R,W,Mod (all but FC)to the files IN the folder. Permissions on the folder itslf, however, should be RO for those same principals.
