I'm working on a Compaq Presario 5000 that's driving me nuts! It continues to freeze up arbitrarily with no error messages. It's an AMD/700mhz, 128mb ram, winME, hardly any other software installed -just aol8.0 and acrobat reader. Here's what I've tried:

Formated drive and reinstalled o/s
Replaced video card
replaced ram
ran thorough scandisk - no errors
defragged
Upgraded to IE 6.0

I'm going to try uninstalling Norton Antivirus 2003 to see if that helps. Any other ideas would be most appreciated.

Of all the things I've ever lost, I miss my mind the most......

Is it a hard freeze where the os locks up and the hard disk stops? Under what conditions does it happen?

Yes, everything stops, have to power off to reboot. Happens with nothing running in the background (clean boot) and only screensaver on.

That really sounds like hardware. This is usually a bad video adapter, but you already tried that. Sounds like mainboard issue.

Well, I reformatted and reinstalled everything again, and it ran overnight without freezing, so I think it's okay now. Thanks for your suggestions.

Hi,
I also have a 700mhz AMD duron processor. I have the same problem where the computer hangs for no apparent reason. Its completely random, and there is no response when i type or move the mouse. I was wondering if this freesing recurred long after reformatting your hardrive and installing everythin again?

Actually it did start freezing again after formatting. I wound up getting rid of Norton anti-virus (changed to AVG) and turned off system restore, and it seems to be ok now.

I had the same symptom with the same processor, and tried the same remedies. Finally, since the machine was still under warrantee, I took it to the manufacturer, who found a problem with the motherboard, which they replaced.

Just reformatted my drive and managed to installed Win ME. During its rebotting process, I'm confronted with this screen "While initializing device shell.......Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. System halted."

From here, its goes into a vicious loop. Reboot, choose safe mode option, system hangs and reboots itself and back to safe mode option...

System: Athlon 550MHz, K7 Pro Ver:1 motherboard, 128 SDRAM

What could be wrong?

peteryptan - almost certainly a hardware problem. I'd start with RAM - then try elimination (boot without hardware attached).

WINME + NORTON + DEFRAG = freeze

I unloaded 3 Norton Static VxD files and the problem went away...........sounds odd, but thats what happened.

but the problem was happening but not nearly as often.
B4 it was about 1 out 4 / then unchecked the VxD's and then it was 1 out 10.

so still there right.

FORMAT

w00t w00t install went fine, np
startet to mess around, run some intense programs....... sweet np..........untill, i install Norton again

so me thinking now ;)

FDISK, FORMAT, install

and get mcafee

question: does anyone see any reasoning behind what i said?
