I have been looking at the FAQs on the site for passing form data to email and /or a database. Most of the xamples ahev used the "get" method. I have been used to using the post method so that the information is not passed in the url. Is there a preferred way to pass data?

It's all up to you. Here's some good reading about this topic.

The biggest issues (and the article brings them up) are that GET has a limited length (which I've hit before) and that if the user bookmarks the page (marks it as a favorite) all of that GET data will be stored as part of the bookmark (though occasionally that's a feature).

Nothing wrong with POST that I can find.
