I have a strong suspicion this is a FAQ, but I can't find the answer, so please bear with me...
I'm editing a Powerpoint presentation whose file size is getting out of hand. One single slide, with about a dozen images all well under 100K in size is saving as about 2.5MB. I tried to troubleshoot by making changes in the way I insert or paste the images onto the slide, saving, and seeing the file size change, but I can't make sense of it (sometimes, REMOVING an image increases the file size). Is there
a) a procedure to remove inefficiency from or otherwise compact Powerpoint presentations?
b) a "best practice" for importing images (typically JPGs) so they take up the least amount of space?

Saving to network drives is taking ever longer, so I'd appreciate any help!

Hi, Rob!

You have "Allow fast saves" checked under Tools, Options, Save tab. If you uncheck it, your file size will shrink again. The best explanation I have been given is that under "Fast Save" option, PPT remembers your work (edits) and keeps adding to the file.

As far as your second question, I believe JPG's or WMF's may be your best bet, as far as size goes; if you are not concerned with resolution. "Age is a high price to pay for maturity."

Thanks for the suggestion. I have now turned it off. However, after I did so, I resaved, and the file size is exactly the same. Is there something else I need to do?

Rob,
I'm not sure of how to remove the bloat from data that was tacked onto the file while Fast Save was in action. It may be that you're not going to get any benefit unless you recreate (arggh). I'm looking into it...
Here's a "best practices" link, in the meantime:

Be sure version saving is off, clean up all temporary files, then do a File Save As...

Just saving the file won't clean it up, but saving it as a new and different file should reconstruct the file.
