What kind of Power Management strategy do you guys use. Currently I just have all my workstations screens going off after around 20 Minutes. Is this bad on your machine to run all the time. The reason I don't spin down HD's or put in suspend mode is I have SUS doing updates and don't want the pc's to be off.. Is it bad for the computers to be running around the clock??? Please drop me some suggestions..

thanks

not really that bad... there's a lot of computers that gets kept on 24/7 and not just servers but home computers as well.
This isn't really a problem since there's not much moving parts, however for the components with moving parts, it does tend to run them down faster...
These include your fans and your hard drives mainly, but even so, they should last more than long enough...

I had a few HD's die lately and this is what made me ask the question. Problem is I have my viruscan and stuff like that running at night and don't like to spin down HD cause it stops all my apps from running,, like virus, and SUS, updates , ETC..

thanks for reply :)

ahh, well...

if you're scheduling hdd intensive apps regularly then that'll definitely wear them out quicker...

avscan, defrag, or any other intensive i/o ops will definitly reduce the lifetime of your hdd, however most hdd's nowadays are rated for roughly 10 years of service, and I usually tend to replace my hdd's WAY before that...

I personally don't use the power management on any of my servers and pc's. I have never had a problem NOT using them, and it doesn't save that much energy, though some.
I just stick to making sure that we use the screen savers.
