A few times I acccidentally shut off my Dell XP-Pro with the power button, (led is very dim) which is set to power off in ctrl pnl.

There were programs running. It went through what seemed like a normal logoff and shutdown, and didn't give the automatic scandisk run at next power on.

Is it OK with XP to use the power button for shutdown, or should a software shutdown always be used ? Please explain either answer, thx

When it's set up like that, you can look at your power button as a shortcut to the start -> shutdown process. It is still a good idea to close all programs first.

Control Panel/ Power Options/ Advanced/ Power Buttons.

When I press the power button on my computer(Scrolling options).

Select an option to specify what action your computer takes (for example, goes into a low-power state or shuts down) when you press the Power button.
