Possible to run Aloha, in demo mode, on virtual machine? 2

Basically what the titles says. If so, where to get the setup files and any documentation?

Here is how I have it running without a key in demo mode in Hyper-V

Use a known data folder and create a c:\bootdrv\aloha folder
copy data and back copy called newdata
delete any .log files in data and newdata
set DOB to today
delete any eod settings in events.cfg
install aloha as normal into c:\bootdrv\aloha Do not check anything about demo mode or run both foh and boh on same machine
set computer name to something like demo1 (I used Hyper-pc2)
set termstr=hyper-pc
once Aloha shortcut is created I added /remote to end of it
so the target is c:\bootdrv\aloha\bin\alohamgr.exe /remote
This will get BOH running
Once aloha manager is up, log in and remove any printers and opos assigned to terminal number you are using. I my case term2

for Front of house I used this as the iber.bat

Thanks for the informative post! I'll give it a try (might be some time from now, I'm still focusing on other POS platforms but have started doing research for Aloha now) and let you know if I hit any snags with this. From what I understand is you setup a VM for BOH and on the same VM you ran a FOH instance? OR, did you create a new VM for the FOH?

I have installed Aloha and have the manager up and running but I don't know the default user/password for manager. What would it be for version 6.5 or 6.7?

There is no default user ID and Password for either version. Most of us have a database we use that already has a know emp id, password and highest security level. You will need a program like dbfnavigator to clear passwords or make changes to emp.dbf file in newdata folder.

Edit: I tried to run iber for FOH GUI to login as an employee to open tickets, etc like a normal terminal would operate but I get an error "Local terminal not specified" and it exits.

I missed that section, sorry, I've been bouncing around on different threads trying to get as much info as possible.

I got the batch file setup, configured lana, and now it runs iber, but when it's initially open it counts up to find fileserver and then finally it shows "Looking for fileserver" and a button on the bottom to create a file server which when pressed, asks for a password.

Make sure line set server=???? is correct. It needs to be your computer name not mine. Also make sure simple file sharing is disabled

Thanks for your quick reply. I've changed the batch files to what is necessary for my VM system and also disabled simple file sharing. There is a system share for BOOTDRV pointing to the correct folder. I'm assuming setup created that.

I'm still having no luck. I've went back a few times in checkpoints on my VM and trying a few things but still have an issue running iber and I believe Aloha manager isn't working right either. When I open the Aloha manager, I login but it takes about 5 mins of "unresponsive" before it allows me to do anything and then once I'm there, all the menus are empty like and I can't change anything.

When I run the install, I'm choosing to load sample data too so there is a database to start. Any more ideas on why I can't get this to work?

are you using the short cut created during install to launch Aloha Manager? Did you add c:\bootdrv\aloha\bin\alohamgr.exe [highlight #FCE94F]/remote[/highlight] to the short cut? The database you are using is also going to be issue. The sample database is horrible with many issues. It is not meant to be used the way you are intending it to. The user ID you are logging in does not have boh security access, and is why you are getting blank options.
the 5 minute lag is becuase control service is attempting to start. You did not start Aloha with /remote. You also mentioned you have used different check points. Make sure if you have gone back to previous point you have put back in any needed settings.

Setting up Aloha to run without key in demo mode takes some understanding of how Aloha works and a known database. It is not something I recommend to someone with limited aloha resources.

I created a shortcut on the desktop with /remote, see image here. Still has the 5 min lag when logging in.

I do have a database from one of my clients but it's just the EOD grind and doesn't include NewData. Do I need the NewData folder or can I restore from just what I have to make a working database?

FYI, for the BOH security, I went in and modified the EMP.dbf table and took a user and emptied the BOHPASSWORD field and changed the SECLEVEL to 997 which is the highest value from SECLVL. When I attempted to login with the manager then, it prompted for a new password and logged me in and gave me the 5 min lag, but had empty menus and no functionality.

Setting up Aloha to run without key in demo mode takes some understanding of how Aloha works and a known database.

you need the entire newdata folder. It has all the files aloha manager needs. It may be why you are having issues

OK, I will get a copy of their NewData folder from the client. What is the best way to get the data without having corruption or data missing? Before start of the day? Is there any services I should shut down first? Any documentation out there on how to go about this the correct way?

Also, during setup, what is the BMP option when importing existing data?

Just copy NewData. When you make changes in AlohaMGR, it saves them to the new data folder, otherwise, it isn't locked.

I've got Aloha Manager up and running with full menus, etc.

When I execute FOH batch file iber.exe tries to find the file server for 30 secs then goes to another screen to create file server.
