Possible DNS Network Connectivity Issue

I uninstalled the DNS and reinstalled the DNS on a 2000 Server. Since then computers on the network are losing connectivity to network resources and having to restart in order to access these resources. The original dns was heritageproperty.com and I changed it to heritagedomain.com. The reason for the change was that computers could not access the website heritageproperty.com because it is hosted by a third party. So the routing to the website was off. Can the network issues be caused by the change in the dns server? If so what do I need to do to uninstall and reset the domain controller and all machines to use the correct dns. I know that the computers are not replicating in the dns lookup unless it is changed to heritageproperty. All machines have computernames.heritageproperty. So it seems they aren't picking up the new dns setting. But I haven't taken the server off of domain controller and added it back either. Thanks

DNS suffixes are usually configured by an option in the DHCP server. Did you remember to make the change in DHCP to set the DNS suffix to heritagedomain.com?

What is the name of your Active Directory domain? Active Directory and DNS must be using the same domain name.

If I go into Active Directory Domains and Trusts, it does not match. It says heritageproperty.com. The DNS Domain Name in DHCP says heritagedomain.com. The Active Directory pre windows name is HERITAGEDOMAIN. I did not set this up originally and there were issues so I made some changes but I may have missed something. It seems the heritageproperty.com is set for all users win2k or greater. How can I get this changed and where are all the locations this must be changed?

When you created the AD domain, you called it heritageproperty.com. This name cannot be changed unless you recreate the AD domain.

would this cause the computers to lose connectivity overnight and periodically? If so I will need to recreate AD and then reinstall DNS to match...

Hard to say. I'm not sure. The way I see it, clients will query DNS for the location of a domain controller within the domain they belong to. I assume they still belong to the domain heritageproperty.com and DNS now holds records for heritagedomain.com hence it will not be able to resolved the DNS request.

Just for jolly's, try this. Take a client you know loses connectivity and throw a hosts file on it pointing to the correct dns server name and ip. You might also try ipconfig /flushnds and let them resolve. Good luck.
