Possible DNS issue

we have SBS 2003 which people connect to fine using wireless connections but often the system keeps knocking people off the system. the only thing that seems to bring them back on is a reboot. They cannot access internet, printers etc.

We have changed the wireless box for a new box so that should be ok. Is this a possible DNS issue?

Can you ping SBS IP when that happens?

when someone loses connection if we try to ping the server often it fails,sometimes when they cannot get printers for example we can ping. (print spooler etc is fine)

Are all your clients pointed to the SBS server for their DNS, or are they pointed at the ISP's DNS servers? The former is the proper config.

It sounds like you are functioning in an environment that requires broadcasts for name resolution rather than a healthy DNS environment. That, and maybe the microwave oven in the breakroom is killing your wireless. Have you made sure that you don't have other nearby offices using the same wireless channel that you are on?

Check if the order at which DNS is set in TCP/IP network settings under advanced and then the DNS tab.

Your inside DNS server should always be first and then any outside DNS resolution second, third.


If these setting are not correct you definitly would have internet connection issues.

Note, when you have several DNS servers listed in your TCP/IP settings it will only use the 2nd DNS server in the list if the 1st one is down or failed.

Hence your PC will only query the 1st DNS server. If this query fails it will not try the query on the 2nd listed DNS server etc.
