you can try to ping your server using a port ping util... like IPscan

As mentioned above, a port scan will tell you what ports are open on the server. If you wish to see what ports are being used at a certain time on the server, you could use the netstat command on the server.
A nice gui way to check this out is using a product like Active Ports -
