I use MS Windows 2000 Professional. I have problem with popup ads. When I work on the computer in my office or home, there are always many popup screens even I do not open IE. I installed Spybot but the problem is still there. I would like to consult the experts what I should do for this problem. Thanks a lot for any help.

Stop your Messenger service and set it to manual startup.

Thanks a lot for answering my question. I did set messenger service manual startup but popups are still there.

Did you stop the service though? If you just set it to manual and don't reboot, it will still be running.

Beyond that, I'd run Adaware to see if it can find anything as well.

Yes. I did stop the service first and set it to manual, then reboot the computer.
I have Spybot installed on my computer. Every time I run it, it found something, then fixed. But I still have popups.
What is Adware?
Thank you very much for your help.

First check add/remove programs and make sure there are no search bars etc... I personally like spyhunter to find spyware. You can download the free scanner here.

but if you want to remove you have to buy.

Then if you still have problems try using the following program.

If all else fail, reboot.

use google toolbar to stop most of the pop ups, and make sure to run hijackthis.exe to find any unwanted programs

Check the status of the Messenger service. If it's running then something is starting it, so set it to 'disabled' instead of 'manual'.

You can also look at the http addresses of the popup ads and try to find the addresses in the registry. Remove them from the registry. I have stopped many popup problems this way. You can also do a "contains text" search on your computer and look for a reference file that might be associated with a registry call.

Thanks for all helps. I have set Messenger service to disable. I used SpyBot to scan my computer everyday. It seems some popup wrote into my registry and some of them in the cookie but I do not know how to delete them. I used fix selected problems to fix them on Spybot. But next time they will be back. There are 18 problems on my computer.
For example, CleverIEHooker.Jeired, it has 3 entries, search hook is in registry value, class ID is in registry key, and another search hook is also in registry value. How can I delete them?
Thanks.

Go looking for a product called 'Shoot the messenger' and run it..it sorts it out...
