Pop3 and imap not working, whats missing?

I have tried to use Imap to read and send mail with exchange 5.5. The protocol is enabled both for server and recipient. This is a site server and it has no Internetconnector installed. Internet is reached thru a Bridgehead server. We like to use our site server with Imap and ldap or pop3.

Do we have to install Internet connector on the site server for this?

If we have to do this, does it work with our bridgehead server?
