hi can anyone help me!!! i have recieved a machine back from repair which had a new hard drive fitted...

a old ghosted image of the schools first win98 was installed, the pol editor was tied up to such a state not allowing even the administrator to alter the policies..

I have tried safe mode and removed the network card. the policy editor is not loaded in the software of the machine

I have searched every were on the internet for some type of bootable disc that i can use to reset the values to allow me back into the machine. i have heard that this is possible and to also have another disc to put the policies back after resetting.........

Is this computer on a domain or is it stand-alone?

What policies can't the admin change?

Can you create a new policy and replace the old config.pol file. Only in the new policy, allow access necessary to do what it is you need to do....sort of like reverse phsycology...

this computer is on a domain but i cant access it...
admin cannot change any policies as the pol editor is not loaded and there is no access to the drives or editing tools in win98... i whish to create and install a new policy but i cant install it.... i was told there was a way in DOS but i don't know how can you help many thxs

"this computer is on a domain but i cant access it..." The Domain, .pol file or the computer altogether, meaning you can't login?

If it is on a Domain, then the config.pol is in the sysroot of the DC or PDC (depending on the domain type). Replace that file.

Is this machine the only 98 machine in the domain, or can you load the policy editor on a different machine and create the new policy?

Are your 98 clients obtaining their policys from the (P)DC or was the policy set on a stand alone basis.

"there is no access to the drives or editing tools in win98" you mean you can't logon to the computer because a policy is restricting this?

If so, disconnect from network, boot to safe mode, ESC the login....click start>run>regedit>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Network>Logon and set the DWORD values to 0 for Validate. Hewissa

All you really should need is poledit.exe. It is a small program which will fit on a floppy. You should be able to run it and make the necessary changes.

I can log on but there is no run command or A:\ in my computer..........

If so, disconnect from network, boot to safe mode, ESC the login....click start>run>regedit>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Network>Logon and set the DWORD values to 0 for Validate.

done but no run command.....

is there a way of editing the registery in DOS ????

Can you get a DOS prompt? Do you have an A: drive now? If so, you can run it in the prompt.
Also, do you hae email? Send the file as an attachment to yourself and then run it.
