Hi all,

I'm currently in the middle of a point-in-time recovery and am restoring all datafiles for this purpose. I know that it is not necessary to restore control files and redo logs, but wondered whether the system datafile should be restored also? Any advice gratefully received. TIA.

Yes, you need the system tablespace datafiles.

As you suggest in your message you restore ALL datafiles and enough archived redo logs but not ctrl & online redo. This is to ensure that all data is recovered to the same point (it would be no good if the system tablespace was in advance of the rest).

Then recover the database ("using backup controlfile"). Once that has finished, open with resetlogs, shutdown and take a backup and off you go!

Good luck

Gary, many thanks for your swift response. Much appreciated. I'm restoring the datafiles, including system as we speak - I'll let you know how I get on. Cheers.

Hey Gary, just to confirm that the restore and recovery went fine. Thanks again for the advice. A virtual beer-voucer to you, sir! Cheers.
