My laptop a DELL inspiron with 256MB RAM and 30GB HD, plus a Samsung CD-RW, Windows XP installed.

It starts as normal but when try to load XP it says in a blip "NTDETECT failed".

I've tried to F8 in XP start menu but none of the options work. Also tried to boot from original XP CD-R and also from a bootable CD-R with recovery utilities with no luck, also tried disableng all bot devices from bios exept CD and it says "operating system not found".

Is there a way to fix this?, why it's not booting from CDROM even that it's first boot device or only boot device?.

Please help needed, my bst regards to you all, and hanks for the help.

In the BIOS, check whether order of booting is Cd drive and then hard disk or not. Make the cd drive the as the first one to be able to use your recovery disk.

Did it. I selected de first boot device as CDROM and the same problem, I even disabled all othr boot devices and the same,

Thanks for your reply.

I came across the following article which gives steps to clear the CMOS in situations like this. Just give it a shot.

Turn off the computer and any attached devices, such as printers, monitors, and external drives.

Unplug all power cords from electrical outlets, and remove the cover.

Locate the Clear CMOS/Recovery jumper on the system board.
View system board diagrams.

If necessary, remove any adapters that impede access to the Clear CMOS/Recovery jumper.

Move the jumper from the standard position (pins 1 and 2) to pins 2 and 3.

Replace any adapters that were removed.

Replace the cover.

Reconnect the power cords for the computer and monitor to electrical outlets.

Restart the computer, leave it on for approximately 10 seconds.

Turn off the computer by holding the power switch for approximately 5 seconds.

Unplug the power cords from electrical outlets.

Remove the cover.

If necessary, remove any adapters that impede access to the Clear CMOS/Recovery jumper.

Return the Clear CMOS/Recovery jumper to its original position.

Replace any adapters that were removed.

Replace the cover and reconnect any cables that were disconnected.

Turn on the computer. The computer should sound 2 beeps. The time and date should need to be set. If not, the procedure did not work.

Just to confirm, make sure you are saving your changes in BIOS and then exiting.

Yes I'm sure of saving the BIOS I'll try the other stuff but this is a Notebook, I'll have to look for the shortcircuit jumper.

Thank for your reply.

Regards

Olsao tried to boot only from CDROM and in my PC works OK but on the notebook it says "operating system not found".
